Behind the scenes of Canva
You are introduced to Canvas”22. Meet the incredible talent behind it. Our Arts HC member Nicola Bronkhorst and her amazing team of painters did an amazing job in creating our Canvas along with our “sleep” Laureus.
There is a deeper meaning behind our Canvas.” The canvas has two grounds. The foreground and background. The foreground depicts a mature man looking away from the viewer.
The grown man is depicted in "Grime Art".
Grime Art is an art form that is mostly used for digital art, because it is a new, popular, unique art style. The background is depicted in such a way that it has an old Renaissance effect with a realistic "look and feel". This "look and feel" must have a dramatic feel to emotion. This background should develop emotions of anxiety, depression, fear, sadness, chaos, jealousy, hatred. He feels as if he wants to scrape off the skins, due to all these emotions he feels, and experiences.

People have this outlook on him as this model of who and what everyone wants to be, but no one really knows what's going on, nobody knows what's going on behind the scenes, nobody knows what's going on behind his eyes, and nobody knows what he's thinking or do not feel. That's why this canvas is designed by us, a perfect depiction of the theme: “Peaceful Chaos”.

Meet one of the head painters Madelein. In our interview with Madelein we discovered her perspective on being one of the head painters and how much pressure was involved. ”It took 16 hours to complete the whole painting. Madelein also was mostly amazed by the support from the ladies in the residence. The singing of blommetjie at 4am symbolised unity and sisterhood, it was unbelievable! Juggling roles in the residence can be stressful and here is what Madelein has to say about contributing to the Canvas’22. “Well it takes a lot of time but the end results are always so rewarding. Being one of the head painters was a great experience. I wouldn’t change that experience for anything”.
The other head painter Elmeree was also ecstatic and she was very excited and honoured to be part of canvas. Her final take on the painting was that it was unique and the colour combination was really eye-catching. She was very stressed and nervous while painting because she was scared to make mistakes. Being part of the team was very exciting and fun for her.
Nicola also emphasised that working with Laureus was wonderful, given the fact that they really take pride in their art like we do. ”Taking part and doing my job as the Arts HC member play even the slightest part in bringing back what we know and love as student life, then I will gladly do it”.
